Arsenal legend tips Man United signing Anthony Martial to flop
Former Arsenal midfielder Ray Parlour doesn't expect Anthony Martial to be a success at Manchester United
Anthony Martial won’t be a hit at Manchester United, according to Arsenal legend Ray Parlour.
The Red Devils signed the 19-year-old France international in a £36m deal from Ligue 1 side Monaco on transfer deadline day last Tuesday.
It is a massive gamble to take on a 19-year-old kid
Martial was Louis van Gaal’s most-expensive signing of the summer after the United manager snapped up seven new players.
Former Arsenal midfielder Parlour isn’t convinced that Martial will prove a hit after his princely transfer fee.
“Will Martial succeed? I look forward to seeing him play, but I think it’s going to be a miss, because the money they’ve spent is an unbelievable amount,” Parlour told Sky Sports.
“For a 19-year-old kid, he’s not proven.
“If he proves to be like a Thierry Henry, which is what a lot of people are saying, then he could obviously be a great signing, but I think it is a massive gamble to take on a 19-year-old kid.
“With the money they’ve put out, I could be totally wrong, but I’m going to say miss on that one.”
Martial won his first France cap in a 1-0 victory over Portugal in Lisbon on Friday night after he came on as a second-half substitution.
The teenager could make his United debut in their clash against bitter rivals Liverpool at Old Trafford on Saturday evening.
The United signing scored 11 goals in 52 Ligue 1 appearances for Lyon and Monaco over the past two seasons.
