Arsenal need more than just Karim Benzema, warns ex-Gunner
Sol Campbell says the transfer of Karim Benzema to Arsenal would not have been enough to inspire a title challenge
Sol Campbell believes that the transfer of Karim Benzema alone would not have been enough to transform Arsenal into genuine Premier League title contenders.
The north London side were heavily linked with a big-money swoop for the France international striker during the summer months as the forward’s future at Real Madrid remained a source of speculation.
However, a move for Benzema failed to materialise as Arsenal’s signing of Petr Cech from Chelsea ended up as the Gunners’ only recruit of the summer.
And former Arsenal defender Campbell feels that Arsene Wenger’s squad is in need of a number of key players, not just another option up front.
Campbell told the Daily Mail: “To win the Premier League, if they don’t buy any more players, they really need everybody fit.
“There was talk of Karim Benzema coming and really, if they want to win the Premier League, Arsenal need to push the boat out to get those special players who will make a difference.
“You can’t make one big signing. Everybody does that, and you never move on.”
Arsenal are currently sixth in the table after taking seven points from their opening four games.
