Arsenal transfers: Wenger needs to sign natural goal-scorer, says Seaman
David Seaman discusses the signing Arsenal need to make in January
David Seaman has urged Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger to sign a natural goal-scorer in the January transfer market.
The Gunners have been reliant on misfiring Olivier Giroud and injury-prone Theo Walcott in the opening weeks of the season.
They just want a guy who can hit a snap-shot and you know it’ll be on target. That’s what’s important
However, the Arsenal pair have scored a total of two goals in six Premier League games, whilst Alexis Sanchez is still to open his account for the season.
The FA Cup winners were linked with a move for Napoli striker Gonazlo Higuain, Real Madrid forward Karim Benzema and Paris Saint-Germain star Edinson Cavani in the summer but touted moves failed to materialise.
And former Arsenal goalkeeper Seaman believes Wenger needs to address his attacking options in the next transfer window.
“I think they need a natural goalscorer like an Ian Wright or a Robbie Fowler,” Seaman told Sky Sports.
“It’s what they used to call the fox in the box. They just want a guy who can hit a snap-shot and you know it’ll be on target. That’s what’s important.
“In Theo [Walcott] they’ve got a guy with pace who can take anyone on down the sides but he’s not a natural finisher and in [Olivier] Giroud they’ve got more of a typical centre-forward who can hold the ball up and score with his head or his feet but he’s not an out-and-out finisher.
“When you play Giroud or Theo you’ve got two different strikers. One is holding the ball up for the defence to come out and take the pressure off. But with Theo sometimes it is coming straight back at you and that’s difficult to deal with defensively in terms of getting out.”
Arsenal face Tottenham Hotspur in the League Cup third round at White Hart Lane on Wednesday night.
The Gunners lost 2-1 to Spurs at The Lane in the Premier League last season after Harry Kane’s second-half brace.
