Wenger gives latest Arsenal injury update ahead of Chelsea trip
Arsene Wenger reveals that Per Mertesacker is a doubt for Arsenal's trip to Chelsea in the Premier League on Saturday
Per Mertesacker remains an injury doubt for Arsenal’s trip to Chelsea on Saturday lunchtime, Arsene Wenger has confirmed.
The German centre-half has been struggling with a virus in recent days and has not featured for the north London club since the 2-1 win over Crystal Palace back on 16 August.
Gabriel Paulista has been partnering Laurent Koscielny in the heart of Arsenal’s defence in recent games, and Wenger appeared to suggest that his central defensive line-up will remain the same for Saturday’s lunchtime clash at Stamford Bridge.
The Gunners boss also confirmed that the north London side have no fresh injury concerns heading into the crunch Premier League clash.
“We have no new injuries,” said Wenger, speaking at a news conference at Arsenal’s London Colney training base on Friday morning.
“Mertesacker was an illness and could still be a bit short (to play against Chelsea). I have to decide that.”
Arsenal head into Saturday’s game in third place in the Premier League, five points behind leaders Manchester City. Chelsea, meanwhile, are a further six points behind the Gunners after their stuttering start.
“It is a big game,” the Frenchman added. “Let’s not forget it is the start of the season. What matters on the day is the performance.”
