Arsene Wenger: My message for Jose Mourinho ahead of Chelsea v Arsenal
Arsene Wenger says Chelsea's stuttering start to the season is "difficult to assess"
Arsene Wenger has told Jose Mourinho that he will have to deal with the pressure he has found himself under following Chelsea’s poor start to the season.
Wenger takes his Arsenal side to Stamford Bridge on Saturday lunchtime as he bids to guide the Gunners to victory over their bitter local rivals.
Chelsea have endured a stuttering start to their Premier League title defence, with the west London side slumping to a 3-1 loss to Everton last weekend to leave them 11 points behind early pace-setters Manchester City in the table.
It is an unusual position for the Chelsea manager, but Wenger says that all top coaches must learn to deal with their difficult spells.
“These are situations that are difficult to assess,” Wenger told a news conference at Arsenal’s London Colney training ground on Friday morning.
“It’s less enjoyable when it doesn’t go well but every manager in the game for a long time has to do deal with that.
“People come to football to watch football and all the rest is secondary. What is important is what people will see at 12:45 and let’s focus on that.
“I focus on what I love which is football and respect everybody and all the rest doesn’t affect me. What is important is football for me.”
Wenger also confirmed that Per Mertesacker is a doubt for Saturday’s game due to illness but the Gunners have no new injury concerns.
