Arsene Wenger runs rule over Man United signing Anthony Martial
Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger says Man United's big-money deal to sign Anthony Martial sums up summer transfer market
Arsene Wenger says Manchester United’s big-money signing of Anthony Martial epitomised the summer transfer market.
The Red Devils made the 19-year-old midfielder their third most-expensive signing in the club’s history on transfer deadline day on Tuesday afternoon.
Martial is a huge talent – he’s 19 years old. The investment is absolutely huge as well. It shows you that there’s not many players in the world who can strengthen these teams
Martial has scored just 11 goals in Ligue 1 and the United signing is still waiting to receive his first France cap after he was called up to Laurent Blanc’s squad this week.
And Wenger believes Europe’s biggest clubs are struggling to identify players capable of significantly strengthening their squads, highlighted by United’s signing of inexperienced Martial.
“What happened last night with Monaco, who sold Martial to Manchester United for 80million Euros, I’ve heard… Martial scored 11 goals in the French championship – that sums it up well,” Wenger is quoted as saying by Sky Sports.
“That means it’s not the money that’s missing at the moment, it’s not the desire of investment that is missing, it’s the number of players available who can strengthen the big clubs.
“The problem at the moment is finding the players that guarantees you are a better team after, and that example last night shows you very well.

Martial signed a three-year deal and made his Ligue 1 debut for Monaco in November 2013, netting two league goals as the club finished runners-up to Paris Saint-Germain in the French top flight.
In his two and a half seasons as a professional, Martial has netted just 13 league goals, all of which have come for Monaco and 10 of which were scored in league action.
