Arsene Wenger runs rule over new Man United signing

Arsene Wenger describes Anthony Martial as an "exceptional talent" following his big-money transfer to Manchester United

Arsene Wenger has described Anthony Martial as an “exceptional” talent but claims that the Manchester United new-boy is more of a winger than a striker.

The Red Devils are believed to have parted with as much as £36m to bring the 19-year-old to Old Trafford from Monaco on transfer deadline day as Louis van Gaal bolstered his attacking options.

It has been reported that the eventual transfer fee could rise to as much as £58m in the coming years.

Arsenal manager Wenger believes that the teenager has plenty of potential, and revealed that he has been tracking his development for some time.

Wenger told a news conference on Thursday morning: “We [have] known him since he was a kid, but he’s more of a winger type.

“He’s an exceptional talent I agree with you but I believe that he plays in positions where we have players like Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, Alexis Sanchez and Joel Campbell who can play in the position.”

Martial will be hoping to make his Premier League debut when Manchester United host Liverpool at Old Trafford on Saturday evening.

The Red Devils are looking to return to winning ways in the top flight after their surprise 2-1 loss to Swansea City before the international break.
