Brendan Rodgers: Liverpool need time to prove worth
Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers says his Reds side shouldn't be judged on these early Premier League games
Brendan Rodgers says Liverpool need time to prove their worth after a mixed start to the Premier League season.
The Reds initially impressed after a three-game unbeaten run saw the Merseyside outfit beat Stoke City and Bournemouth before a goalless draw with Liverpool.
I think this team will show its worth over the course of the season, not just in these early games
However, the five-time European champions suffered a surprise 3-0 reversal against West Ham United at Anfield in their most recent Premier League fixture.
Rodgers spent nearly £100m on new signings this summer after he brought in Roberto Firmino in a £29m deal from Hoffenheim and signed Christian Benteke in a £32.5m transfer from Aston Villa.
And the Liverpool boss is adamant that his new-look side needs time to blossom over the course of the Premier League campaign.
“It was from December through [when Liverpool found form in 2014-15]. We are still only in early September,” Rodgers told his pre-match media conference on Friday afternoon.
“In the season when we nearly won the league we didn’t really play that brand of football until November or December time. So we need to give this group a bit of time.
“That’s something ill-afforded to you in modern football but I get great excitement when I see the players and see the likes of Daniel Sturridge coming back in.
“I think this team will show its worth over the course of the season, not just in these early games.”
The Reds make the trip to Manchester United at Old Trafford in the Premier League on Saturday evening.
Liverpool are level with Louis van Gaal’s side on seven points after four top-flight games.
