Charlie Nicholas: Only two players showed up for Arsenal
Charlie Nicholas launches a scathing attack on Arsenal's performance during their loss to Olympiacos
Charlie Nicholas believes that only Theo Walcott and Alexis Sanchez can be proud of their performances during the Gunners shock 3-2 Champions League loss to Olympiacos on Tuesday night.
Walcott pulled the Gunners back level in the first half with a neat finish after Felipe Pardo’s opener, before Gunners goalkeeper David Ospina fumbled the ball over the line to hand the visitors the lead heading into half-time.
I don’t think they will get out of this group
Sanchez headed in an equaliser in the 65th minute but Alfred Finnbogason poked the visitors ahead once again just 59 seconds later.
The surprise defeat left Arsenal bottom of Group F and in danger of being eliminated from Arsenal’s elite club competition ahead of two games against leaders Bayern Munich.
And former Arsenal man Nicholas feels that most of Arsene Wenger’s men did not perform on the night, with only Walcott and Sanchez doing themselves justice.
Nicholas said on Sky Sports: “Even though Sanchez gets them back into it, the third goal is shambolic. Gabriel is slack and slow and Mertesacker is not quick enough to cover.
“I don’t think they will get out of this group and the reason I think that is because Bayern will keep the ball at the Emirates, Arsenal will get frustrated and they’ll end up getting broken down.
“If Arsenal were to get a draw, they’d have a chance but only two players acquitted themselves in this game – Theo Walcott and Alexis Sanchez.”
Arsenal return to Premier League action when they host Manchester United on Sunday afternoon.
