Chelsea 4 Maccabi Tel-Aviv 0: I’d forgotten winning feeling, jokes Mourinho
Jose Mourinho jokes that he had forgotten the winning feeling after Chelsea thrash Maccabi Tel-Aviv 4-0
Jose Mourinho admitted his relief after Chelsea registered a Champions League win ahead of their clash against Arsenal on Saturday.
Willian broke the deadlock with a free-kick against Maccabi Tel-Aviv after Eden Hazard had missed an early penalty, before Oscar dispatched Chelsea’s second spot-kick of the first half in stoppage time.
I forgot the [winning] feeling. So long. It is a good feeling
Diego Costa was brought on as a replacement for injured Willian in the 23rd minute and the Spanish striker superbly volleyed Chelsea’s third, before Cesc Fabregas sealed an opening group-stage win.
And Mourinho admitted that he would have faced a difficult challenge rallying his Chelsea troops if the west London side had slipped to a third successive defeat in all competitions ahead of a crucial Premier League fixture.
“I can imagine, for all of us to wake up tomorrow after a defeat and to go to Cobham and train, two days before a derby against Arsenal, I could imagine how difficult it would be for everyone,” Mourinho told his post-match news conference.
“The victory is very important.”
Mourinho also joked that he had forgotten what winning felt like after back-to-back Premier League defeats by Crystal Palace and Everton contributed to their worst top-flight start in 28 years.
“I forgot the [winning] feeling. So long. It is a good feeling,” Mourinho added.
“The penalty we missed was a big test for us because when everything goes against you, it is a great test for the character of the players and the team.
“It was good that he had an extra negative episode and the reaction was very good.”
