Chelsea 4 Maccabi Tel-Aviv 0: Player ratings as Diego Costa impresses

Player ratings as Diego Costa comes off the bench to inspire Chelsea to an opening Champions League win

Chelsea

Asmir Begovic A quiet first half for the Bosnian, which will have come as welcome relief after he picked the ball out of his net three times at Goodison Park. 6/10

Cesar Azpilicueta As we’ve come to expect from the Spain international, Azpilicueta put in a hard-working shift at right-back. 6

Kurt Zouma The France defender didn’t put a foot wrong. An assured performance alongside Cahill. 6

Gary Cahill Showed leadership at the back as he donned the captain’s armband. A couple of early tackles and interceptions set the tone for the Chelsea defence. 7

Baba Rahman His first touch as a Chelsea player was to pass the ball to an opponent. The summer signing’s next meaningful contribution was to blast a free-kick out of play. Another poor pass threatened to play Maccabi in on Begovic’s goal. 4

Ruben Loftus-Cheek The youngster was booked for an over zealous tackle inside two minutes. The 19-year-old brought an energy to the Chelsea side that has been missing. Underlining his status as a bright Chelsea prospect. 7

Cesc Fabregas Survived the cull of senior players for the visit of Maccabi. A couple of rangy passes had the Chelsea supporters cooing with delight. An improvement on his recent poor form – and a goal will help his confidence. 7

Willian Broke the deadlock with a free-kick which shared its similarities with Oscar’s against Swansea. The Brazilian was forced off midway through the first half with a knock. 7

Oscar Showed his lack of match fitness with a couple of ponderous first-half touches. In fact, his sharpest movement was to grab the ball off Costa and dispatch a 45th-minute penalty. He will be happy with his return performance from injury. 7

Eden Hazard Horrible penalty attempt which he skied over The Shed End. Did win the free-kick which led to Willian’s opener. As is to be expected with Hazard, the tiny Belgian had a few fleeting moments where he dazzled with his feet, but otherwise, struggled. 5

Loic Remy The striker won his side an early penalty but Hazard couldn’t convert. Shifted to the right wing upon Costa’s introduction and the Frenchman looked a threat. 7

Substitutes

Diego Costa (Man of the match) Replaced Willian much to the delight of the Stamford Bridge crowd. Won a penalty late in added time of the first half. Capped a promising performance with a delightful volley in 60th minute. 8

Ramires Bolstered a tiring Chelsea midfield. 6
