Chelsea can still win Premier League title, insists Arsenal legend

Paul Merson says last weekend was important for defending champions Chelsea

Chelsea can’t be written off in the Premier League title race, according to Paul Merson.

The Blues are eight points behind leaders Manchester City after a 2-0 victory over Arsenal hours before the Citizens suffered a surprise 2-1 defeat by West Ham United at The Etihad last weekend.

The west London side were written off in the title race earlier this month after a return of four points from five games amounted to their worst start to a top-flight campaign since 1986.

But former Arsenal midfielder Merson reckons Jose Mourinho’s men are capable of closing the gap on Manuel Pellegrini’s side ahead of their trip to Newcastle United at St James’ Park on Saturday evening.

Merson told Sky Sports: “The lead at the top is eight points, but Chelsea can win the title. After last week especially.

“It was a huge day for Chelsea last week, to beat Arsenal and then see City lose at home to West Ham. You have to remember Chelsea will look to beat Man City at home in April, so I call it five points.”

Chelsea are in 15th place in the Premier League table ahead of their Magpies clash.
