Danny Murphy: Why Liverpool have real chance of top-four finish
The former Liverpool midfielder believes there are reasons to be positive at Anfield
Liverpool have a real chance of finishing in the top four this season, according to Danny Murphy.
The Reds hoisted themselves up to seventh place in the Premier League table after a 3-2 victory over Aston Villa at Anfield on Saturday afternoon.
ou put Sturridge in that side with Coutinho and Benteke to come back, they’ve got a real chance of a top-four finish
Liverpool striker Daniel Sturridge scored his first top-flight goal since March in the 59th minute before the England man added a second eight minutes later.
And former Reds midfielder Murphy believes the return of Sturridge alongside the likes of Philippe Coutinho, Christian Benteke and Jordan Henderson should provide Liverpool with enough quality to finish in the top four.
Murphy told Match of the Day: “Rodgers has been under pressure, unfairly a little bit, I think.
“Losing your captain Henderson was a difficult thing, Coutinho having the ban and Sturridge missing with injury.
“You put Sturridge in that side with Coutinho and Benteke to come back, they’ve got a real chance of a top-four finish.”
James Milner broke the deadlock within 120 seconds before Sturridge scored twice in eight second-half minutes to seal three points for the Merseyside outfit and end a four-game winless run.
The 26-year-old forward hadn’t scored for the Reds since March at Old Trafford after Sturridge was forced to undergo a hip operation to solve a niggling problem which cut his 2014/15 season short.
