Everton 3 Chelsea 1: Player ratings as Steven Naismith bags treble

Player ratings as Everton striker Steven Naismith scores perfect hat-trick against Chelsea at Goodison Park

Everton

Tim Howard An assured performance from the Everton goalkeeper. Howard could do little to prevent Matic’s goal but solid otherwise. 7/10

Seamus Coleman The Republic of Ireland defender battled with nemesis Costa throughout the match. The right-back offered a real threat going forward as he combined with first Kone and then Lennon. 7

Phil Jagielka Didn’t display the flair of centre-half partner Stones, but the Everton captain put in another solid shift, especially amid late Chelsea pressure. 7

John Stones Good block to deny Azpilicueta. Fantastic piece of skill in 30th minute highlighted the centre-half’s growing composure and confidence. Stylish performance. 8

Brendan Galloway Excellent start for the youngster which culminated in an assist for Naismith’s opener. Showed plenty of energy down the left wing. 7

Gareth Barry The fulcrum of the Everton side. Led, passed and tackled well. The former Manchester City man still has so much to offer the Toffees despite his ageing legs. 8

James McCarthy Powerful strike was parried to safety by Begovic. Complemented Barry but was afforded the luxury of pushing a little further forward. 7

Muhamed Bešić The winger was subbed inside opening 10 minutes due to an apparent hamstring problem. N/A

Ross Barkley Teed up Naismith for the forward’s second goal. Should have been sharper to close down Matic. Excellent run in the second half deserved more. Looks to have an understanding with Naismith as he assisted the hat-trick hero’s third goal. 8

Arouna Kone Glanced a header towards goal which required excellent Begovic save. 6

Romelu Lukaku The giant Belgian was nuisance although he failed to find the net against his former players. Lukaku drew a number of good saves from Begovic. 6

Substitutes

Steven Naismith (Man of the match) Replaced injured Besic and made the breakthrough in the 17th minute. Nodded his header past stranded Begovic. Added a second five minutes later with a long-range effort which crept past the Chelsea goalkeeper. Deservedly, notched his hat-trick with a great run and finish with seven minutes remaining. 9

Aaron Lennon

Chelsea

Asmir Begovic A busy opening half for the Chelsea No2. Couldn’t stop Naismith’s header but made brilliant saves to deny Kone and McCarthy shortly after. Desperately scrambled to prevent Naismith’s second but couldn’t get a hand to the forward’s shot. 7

Branislav Ivanovic The Serbian continued is underwhelming start to the season after he failed to close down Naismith for the Scot’s second goal. 5

Kurt Zouma Showed a lack of experience to allow Naismith to ghost past him for Everton’s opener. 5

John Terry Restored to the Chelsea side. Terry was stranded for Naismith’s third. He is part of a Chelsea defence that is struggling for form. 5

Cesar Azpilicueta Had Chelsea’s best chance of the first half but his shot was deflected wide by Stones. Defensively, struggled to cope with Everton’s threat down the right. 5

Nemanja Matic Spent most of the first half chasing shadows as Everton launched numerous devastating counter-attacks. The Serbian midfielder has enough energy in his legs to halve the deficit eight minute before the break. 7

John Obi Mikel The utility player committed a number of cynical fouls to stem Everton’s counter-attack. Substituted in the 55th minute. 5

Cesc Fabregas The Chelsea midfielder couldn’t influence the game in the opening 30 minutes but became more influential after Matic’s goal. Dropped deeper following introduction of Kenedy. 6

Eden Hazard Another subdued performance. The Belgian had 46 touches of the ball but couldn’t create any significance chances. It was a similar story in the second half as he couldn’t inspire a late equaliser. 5

Pedro Rodriguez A sloppy start. The summer signing was lively but failed to test Howard with some wayward efforts. 6

Diego Costa Had a running battle with Everton full-back Coleman throughout the Goodison Park clash.
