Former Arsenal star tells Arsene Wenger to drop Olivier Giroud
Former Arsenal man Charlie Nicholas doesn't believe Olivier Giroud merits a place on Gunners side
Charlie Nicholas has urged Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger to drop Olivier Giroud in favour of Theo Walcott.
The Gunners striker has scored one goal in four Premier League appearances for the north London side so far this season.
I would leave him on the bench and simply say to him: ‘it’s up to you to respond well to this criticism’
Walcott started ahead of Giroud in their 1-0 victory over Newcastle United at St James’s Park before the international break.
And former Arsenal midfielder Nicholas believes Wenger must stick with England international Walcott up front.
“Giroud hasn’t been in good form and that’s why I’d pick Walcott ahead of him against Stoke,” Nicholas told Sky Sports.
“Giroud’s movement has been pretty static. When he’s on form you see him getting in behind people, taking shots early but I don’t see him doing any of that so far this season. He looks easy to mark and is very predictable.
“He has struggled a bit with the criticism that has come his way but it’s up to him to prove the doubters wrong.
“I would leave him on the bench and simply say to him: ‘it’s up to you to respond well to this criticism’.
“Arsenal will make chances for him it’s up to him to take his chance.”
Arsenal were linked with a big-money move for Giroud’s France team-mate Karim Benzema in the summer but a bid failed to materialise.
Arsenal host Stoke on Saturday looking to make it back to back wins in the Premier League for the first time this season after their 1-0 victory at Newcastle in their most recent outing.
Arsene Wenger’s men are currently sixth in the Premier League table after taking seven points from their opening four top-flight games.
