Former Arsenal striker defends under-fire Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers

John Hartson defends under pressure Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers

John Hartson has leapt to the defence of Brendan Rodgers, although the former Arsenal striker has conceded the Liverpool manager looks set to be sacked.

The Merseyside outfit edged to an unconvincing penalty shootout victory over League Two side Carlisle United in the League Cup third round at Anfield on Wednesday night.

The 43-year-old has seen Liverpool collect just 16 points from their last 15 Premier League games despite spending nearly £200m over the past two summer transfer windows.

But retired Wales international Hartson pointed to big-name departures and injuries to important players in his apparent defence of the under pressure Liverpool manager.

Carlo Ancelotti and Jurgen Klopp have been linked with the Liverpool job in recent days.

And former West Ham striker Hartson conceded that Rodgers looks set to leave the Reds in the near future.

Liverpool welcome Aston Villa to Anfield in their next Premier League game on Saturday afternoon.
