Former Lyon coach runs rule over Man United’s ‘impatient’ Anthony Martial
Former Lyon manager Remi Garde warns Man United boss Louis van Gaal that new signing Anthony Martial will be desperate for football
Anthony Martial is not like former Newcastle United midfielder Hatem Ben Arfa, according to ex-Lyon coach Reme Garde.
The 19-year-old completed a £36m move to Old Trafford from Lyon on transfer deadline day to become United’s third most-expensive signing.
With regards to the football, he could be impatient. When he was training with the youth team, he was asking all the time to be with the reserves
Martial started his career at Lyon like Ben Arfa before he moved to Monaco following an impressive start to his professional career.
And former Lyon boss Garde revealed that Martial will be impatient to secure first-team football at Old Trafford despite his inexperience.
“He wasn’t a Hatem Ben Arfa kind of character,” Garde told the Daily Mail. “Anthony’s parents were not desperate for him to become famous or a star.
“Karim and Hatem were signed young by Lyon but Martial might have been the youngest player we gave a professional contract.
“With regards to the football, he could be impatient. When he was training with the youth team, he was asking all the time to be with the reserves.”
The 19-year-old scored eight goals in his last nine appearances for Monaco last season, although the teenager netted just 12 times in 46 appearances in all competitions.
Martial has been likened to Arsenal legend Thierry Henry in terms of his playing style, with the France legend also having played for Monaco in the early stages of his career.
The United signing could make his Red Devils debut against Liverpool at Old Trafford on Saturday.
