Gary Neville admits surprise at Anthony Martial’s flying Man United start

Gary Neville has admitted his surprise at the instant impact Anthony Martial has had after the teenager fired Manchester United to a 3-2 win over Southampton on Sunday.
United fell behind in the 13th minute when Graziano Pelle converted a loose ball after David De Gea’s superb save.
It’s certainly the best possible start he could have made
But Martial drew the Red Devils level 10 minutes before half-time with a neat turn and shot.
The 19-year-old summer signing from Monaco then took advantage of Maya Yoshida’s poor backpass to slot in a second five minutes after the break.
Juan Mata added a third in the 68th minute, before Pelle headed in a late second as United held on.
Former United defender Neville has been particularly impressed by the composure Martial has shown in front of goal for his new team.
Neville said on Sky Sports: “It’s some start [to Martial’s United career]. I wouldn’t have imagined that he would have the composure that he’s had.
“If you look at his goal-scoring record before he came to Manchester United, it didn’t suggest that he’s got that level of composure.
“There’s a huge pressure on him and he came into the game against Liverpool for 20 minutes and took the chance the way he did.
“Today, he was redundant for 30 minutes and then he showed that composure and class – and it says a lot about him.
“It’s a brilliant start, it’s too early to say he’s a great player because anything can happen but it’s certainly the best possible start he could have made.”
Sunday’s win lifted United up to second in the table and two points behind leaders Manchester city.
