Gary Neville predicts busy run for Anthony Martial at Man United
Gary Neville feels Anthony Martial is already set for a run in Manchester United's starting line-up
Gary Neville believes that Anthony Martial is likely to start most of Manchester United’s games this season after the teenager’s stunning start to life in the Premier League.
The 19-year-old continued his fine form by scoring twice to help United secure a thrilling 3-2 win over Southampton at St Mary’s on Sunday afternoon.
His two goals game after he opened his United account in stunning fashion by coming off the bench to score his side’s third goal in last weekend’s win over Liverpool at Old Trafford.
With the likes of Robin van Persie, Radamel Falcao, Javier Hernandez and Adnan Januzaj all leaving the club this summer, Louis van Gaal now only has a handful of strikers to choose from.
And former United defender Neville feels that the lack of cover up front is likely to mean that Martial will feature on a regular basis this season.
Neville said on Sky Sports: “The problem with Manchester United at the moment is they have gone from having four or five centre-forwards to having one or two.
“He is probably going to have to start 95 per cent of all games if he stays fit. From that point of view it’s not ideal, but it’s more of a necessity at his moment in time.
“Manchester United have always had pace up front, in the counter-attack, and at least with him there is that threat back.
“Centre-forward has to be his position at this moment in time. They’ve got players in wide areas who can play there so he has to be someone who plays centre-forward.
“He’s shown he can do it in the first couple of weeks. The goalscoring is the big thing. Can he step up from being a 15 in 70 man to a one in two man, let alone what the top strikers are now – the Suarez’s of this world and I’m not even going to mention Ronaldo and Messi!
“Suarez is scoring 25 goals a season in 35 games. Can he get to that level? It’s difficult.
“I never thought he’d even be close to that but he has shown in the first couple of weeks he’s got the composure to score goals.”
