Harry Redknapp runs rule over ‘really intelligent’ Tottenham star
The former Spurs manager is backing Eric Dier to receive England call-up
Harry Redknapp has backed “really intelligent” Tottenham Hotspur star Eric Dier to receive a call-up to the England squad.
The versatile Spurs midfielder cancelled out Kevin de Bruyne’s opener in the north London side 4-1 victory over Manchester City at White Hart Lane.
It is that versatility that makes him such an exciting prospect
Dier, who moved to Spurs from Sporting Lisbon last summer, has been the only Tottenham player to start every game for Mauricio Pochettino’s side this season.
And former Tottenham manager Redknapp is impressed with Dier’s performances for the Lilywhites in the opening weeks of the new season.
“Roy Hodgson was watching at White Hart Lane on Saturday and if he wasn’t already, then Eric Dier will definitely be on the England manager’s radar now,” Redknapp told BT Sport.
“He is a really intelligent young footballer. He is quick, passes the ball well and knows his limitations — he is happy to do the dirty work and let others take over.
“He has experience of playing in defence but Mauricio Pochettino has been using him in midfield this season and he has been excellent. It is that versatility that makes him such an exciting prospect.
“Dier thinks like a defender so knows where to position himself on the pitch but now he is proving himself in midfield.”
Dier has scored two goals in seven Premier League appearances for Spurs this season.
The England Under-21 international moved to White Hart Lane in a £4m deal from Portuguese side Sporting Lisbon in 2014.
Tottenham moved up to fifth place in the Premier League table after a five-game unbeaten run in the English top-flight.
