Ian Rush runs rule over ‘quality’ Liverpool signing
Former Liverpool striker Ian Rush says Brendan Rodgers has great options off the bench, including Danny Ings
Ian Rush says Liverpool striker Danny Ings is a quality option to have in the Reds squad.
The England Under-21 international made his premier League debut in their 3-0 defeat by West Ham United at Anfield in the Premier League in their most recent outing.
I watched him in pre-season and for me he is very clever with the way that he makes his runs. He plays off the shoulder of the defender and he makes his runs early
Ings moved to Liverpool after his Burnley contract expired earlier this summer, becoming one of eight new signings to make the move to the Merseyside outfit.
Former Reds legend Rush, who 229 goals in 469 league appearances for the 18-time English champions, is impressed with the vast options that Rodgers has on the substitutes’s bench.
“I was very impressed with Danny Ings in pre-season and he is a quality player that can come on,” Rush told Sky Sports.
“I think Liverpool have got people on the bench who can come on and win you the game now where maybe a couple of years ago we didn’t have that.
“I watched him in pre-season and for me he is very clever with the way that he makes his runs. He plays off the shoulder of the defender and he makes his runs early.
“The likes of Philippe Coutinho, Adam Lallana and Roberto Firmino, who could be playing alongside him, will see those runs and play him in. If you don’t get the ball three or four times sometimes you can stop making the runs but Ings looks very sharp to me and I think he is good in the box as well.”
Ings scored 11 goals in 35 Premier League appearances for Burnley last season.
Liverpool will be without suspended Philippe Coutinho for the trip to Manchester after the Brazil international received a red card in the 3-0 loss to the Hammers.
Brendan Rodgers’s side are in fifth place in the Premier League table following two wins, a draw and a loss.
