Ian Wright explains Arsenal’s biggest mistake against Olympiacos
The Arsenal legend can't understand why Arsene Wenger played David Ospina ahead of Petr Cech
Ian Wright says Arsenal’s biggest mistake on Tuesday night was playing David Opsina ahead of Petr Cech.
The north London side’s Champions League hopes are hanging in the balance after a surprise 3-2 defeat by Greek side Olympiacos at Emirates Stadium.
Why not start with Petr Cech simply because of the experience he’s got? Because we have to win this game, Arsenal have to win this game
Wenger handed Ospina a starting spot after having demoted the Colombia international to second-choice goalkeeper for Arsenal’s Premier League games.
But Arsenal legend Wright felt that Wenger should have started £11m summer signing Cech for a game of such importance after having lost their Champions League opener earlier this month.
“For somebody who’s not playing often, and this is a must-win game, how can you put Ospina in goal? You’ve got to question the manager there,” Wright told BT Sport.
“I think that’s a big mistake. Why not start with Petr Cech simply because of the experience he’s got? Because we have to win this game, Arsenal have to win this game.
“Normally we’re out by the quarter-final, last 16. This time we’ve got a massive hill to climb.”
Arsenal lost 2-1 to Dinamo Zagreb in their opening fixture of the Champions League group stage earlier this month.
The north Londoners face back-to-back games against Group F leaders Bayern Munich in the Champions League.
Wenger’s side switch their focus to the Premier League this weekend ahead of the visit of Louis van Gaal’s table-toppers Manchester United.
