Jamie Redknapp tells Liverpool star to target Man United defender
Former Liverpool midfielder Jamie Redknapp says Christian Benteke should look to target Man United defender Daley Blind
Jamie Redknapp says Liverpool striker Christian Benteke could have some luck if he targets Manchester United defender Daley Blind at Old Trafford on Saturday.
The Red Devils defender has been used in an unorthodox centre-half position alongside Chris Smalling in their opening four Premier League games of the season.
Benteke shouldn’t entertain the thought of getting into a scrap with Chris Smalling on Saturday, he should be pulling on to Blind every time Liverpool get the ball in wide areas
After three successive clean sheets, Blind struggled to contain Swansea City striker Bafetimbi Gomis in a 2-1 defeat at Liberty Stadium in their most recent league fixture.
And former Liverpool captain Redknapp believes Benteke could have similar joy against the Netherlands international if he looks to challenge Blind as opposed to Smalling.
“It’s crucial they play to Christian Benteke’s strengths – and United’s weakness – by putting plenty of crosses into the box,” Redknapp told Sky Sports.
“Bafetimbi Gomis highlighted at the Liberty Stadium that Daley Blind can be exposed at centre-back. I don’t care what anyone says, he can’t play in that position long term. He’s not quick enough, he’s not strong enough in the air and he can be exploited.
“Benteke shouldn’t entertain the thought of getting into a scrap with Chris Smalling on Saturday, he should be pulling on to Blind every time Liverpool get the ball in wide areas – and Liverpool need to get crosses into him.”
Blind moved to United in a £16m deal from Eredivisie side Ajax after the defender impressed during last summer’s World Cup.
United are fifth in the table and level on seven points with top-four rivals Liverpool and Arsenal.
The Red Devils hosts bitter rivals Liverpool in their next Premier League fixture at Old Trafford next Saturday.
