Jermaine Jenas: Louis van Gaal must listen to Man United squad or face the sack
Former Spurs midfielder says Louis van Gaal can't be too rigid with his Man United squad
Jermaine Jenas has urged Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal to listen to the concerns of his players or risk the sack at Old Trafford.
The Red Devils were impressive 3-1 winners against bitter rivals Liverpool in the Premier League on Saturday as Van Gaal’s side bounced back from their Liberty Stadium defeat before the international break.
They have been winning games, but if Van Gaal’s formula is making the players unhappy it will come at a cost
The United manager revealed that he was approached by captain Wayne Rooney and Michael Carrick ahead of the Old Trafford clash, but the Dutchman vowed to stick to his methods following their win over Brendan Rodgers’s side.
Former Tottenham midfielder warned Van Gaal of the risks of being too rigid with his players, urging the Dutchman to look at Andre Villas-Boas’s doomed reign at White Hart Lane.
“The suggestion that many of United’s players are unhappy with Louis van Gaal’s rigid coaching methods is a serious problem for the manager,” Jenas wrote in his Yahoo column. “Unless he makes some changes, it will only end one way: with Van Gaal losing his job.
“One thing players hate is to feel restricted, and United look like a team playing without freedom. They have signed flair players, but they don’t play with flair.
“Some players are best when they’re instinctive but if you’re constantly thinking – especially as a forward – ‘I can’t go into that area, I can’t go too deep to get the ball, I’m not allowed to do that’, creativity is immediately stifled.
“I can count on one hand the amount of entertaining performances I’ve seen from Man United since Van Gaal arrived. They have been winning games, but if Van Gaal’s formula is making the players unhappy it will come at a cost.”
The Red Devils face PSV Eindhoven in their opening Champions League group-stage game in the Dutch city on Tuesday night.
United make the trip to Southampton in their next Premier League fixture on Sunday.
