Jose Mourinho: Why Arsenal and Man United losing makes me sad
The Chelsea manager wants English football to be dominant in Europe
Jose Mourinho says he is not happy that Arsenal, Manchester City and Manchester United lost their Champions League group-stage openers.
The Blues made a winning start to their campaign despite being the only one of the four English sides not to register a Premier League win at the weekend.
I want Arsenal, Man City and Man United to lose in the Premier League. I don’t want them to lose in the Champions League
Chelsea eased to a 4-0 victory over Maccabi Tel-Aviv at Stamford Bridge on Wednesday night after goals from Willian, Oscar, Diego Costa and Cesc Fabregas.
However, the Blues were the only English side to register a win after United lost to PSV Eindhoven and City were beaten by Juventus on Tuesday before Arsenal suffered a surprise 2-1 defeat by Dinamo Zagreb last night.
When asked if Chelsea were the English side best-placed to win the Champions League this season, Mourinho replied: “I think it is sad. I think it is bad. I’m not happy with that.
“I want Arsenal, Man City and Man United to lose in the Premier League. I don’t want them to lose in the Champions League. It is not good for us.
“Season after season, it is difficult for English teams to be successful and start the group phase where you can make 12 points and not three.
“It is bad news for English football.”
Chelsea face bitter rivals Arsenal at Stamford Bridge in the Premier League on Saturday afternoon.
The Blues’s four-point total after five games marks their worst start to a top-flight season since 1986.
