Juan Mata demands Man United extend winning run
The Manchester United midfielder says the league leaders must keep working hard
Juan Mata has urged Manchester United to extend their winning run after rising to the top of the Premier League.
The Red Devils hoisted themselves above Manchester City thanks to an emphatic 3-0 victory over Sunderland at Old Trafford on Saturday afternoon.
Our victory, together with City’s defeat, took us to the top spot in the table, which something new for me since I came to Manchester United
It was the first time United have occupied top spot since Sir Alex Ferguson guided the Red Devils to their 13th Premier League title in May 2013.
And Mata, who moved to United from Chelsea in a then club-record £37.1m deal, wasn’t getting complacent despite United’s impressive results.
“These are happy days,” Mata wrote in his blog, One Hour Behind.
“That’s the feeling I’ve had during the entire week, since things have gone pretty well lately.
“It’s only the start of the season, but I believe we deserve to enjoy such a good moment like this, and keep training hard to extend the good streak for a long time.”
Mata also played down the significance of being first after just seven games of the Premier League season ahead of their trip to bitter rivals Arsenal next weekend.
“Our victory, together with City’s defeat, took us to the top spot in the table, which something new for me since I came to Manchester United.
“From the first day I was hoping to see the team in this place the club has occupied for so many times in the past.
“Our current position is a consequence of good work, but right now, still in September, it doesn’t mean anything if we don’t keep working, and we do know that.
“We have ambition, but we are aware that the way ahead is very long and tough.”
The Red Devils welcome Bundesliga side Wolfsburg to Old Trafford on Wednesday night in the second game of the Champions League group stage.
United have plenty of work to do after a 2-1 defeat by Eredivisie champions PSV Eindhoven in their opening game of the group phase earlier this month.
