Juan Mata: Intelligent Memphis Depay can be Man United’s superstar

Juan Mata has backed Memphis Depay to develop into a key player for Manchester United in the coming seasons.

The Netherlands international has enjoyed a positive start to life at Old Trafford since his summer transfer to the Premier League club from PSV Eindhoven.

The 21-year-old scored United’s opener as the Red Devils slumped to a 2-1 loss to PSV in their Champions League group-stage opener on Tuesday night.

The attacker has also started all five of United’s Premier League games this season to help Louis van Gaal’s men up to second place in the table.

And the Spanish playmaker feels that Depay has all of the necessary ingredients to be a big hit at Old Trafford in the years to come.

Mata told United Review: “He’s very talented, everyone can see that. He is still young so he has to take things step by step, but I think he will do great.

“He’s a good guy and is settling in very well in the team and into the English culture and league. Hopefully he will be very important for us.

“He has all the qualities to be a successful player here. He’s quick, he shoots on goal with both feet and he’s intelligent.

“He’s a great player, but he knows that he has to keep improving and keep going.”

Manchester United, who beat Liverpool 3-1 in impressive fashion last weekend at Old Trafford, return to Premier League action against Southampton at St Mary’s on Sunday afternoon.
