The Spanish goalkeeper was on the brink of joining the ten-times European champions, but the transfer fell through due to paperwork arriving at Spanish authorities one minute after the 23:00 BST deadline.
Liverpool legend Carragher took to Twitter to give his opinion on the dramatic chain of events, which will see de Gea remain a United player until at least June of 2016 when his contract expires.
I'm happy DDG is staying his head won't be right, he'll go for free next summer & Man Utd haven't got 20 mil to panic with today.
— Jamie Carragher (@Carra23) September 1, 2015
A one-club player, Carragher retired in 2013 and has since become a successful analyst for Sky Sports, renowned for his regular sparring with Old Trafford icon and former fierce rival Gary Neville in the wake of Premier League matches.
De Gea is currently on international duty with Spain, but will return to Manchester to compete for a place in Louis van Gaal’s lineup for the upcoming clash with Liverpool.
