Liverpool midfielder dedicates performance to Brendan Rodgers
Lucas Leiva says the Liverpool players are behind Brendan Rodgers
Lucas Leiva says the Liverpool squad are right behind under-fire manager Brendan Rodgers after a 3-2 victory over Aston Villa at Anfield on Saturday.
The Reds eased early nerves on Merseyside after captain James Milner put the home side into a second-minute lead against Tim Sherwood’s men.
We know what has been said about him and think we showed we are a group of players behind him
Sturridge scored twice in the second half, but Villa forward Rudy Gestede also found the back of the net twice to leave Liverpool hanging on for three points.
Braazil midfielder Lucas spoke out in defence of Rodgers after their close-fought win, dedicating the performance to the 43-year-old Northern Irishman.
Lucas told BBC Sport: ” “We wanted to win for the manager.
“We know what has been said about him and think we showed we are a group of players behind him and trying to make everything right.
“We know the pressure is on him but we wanted to play the way he wants us to play and I think we did that.”
Liverpool are five points behind leaders Manchester United and just two points adrift of fourth place after their 3-2 win against Villa.
The Reds have been linked with a move for former AC Milan and Chelsea manager Carlo Ancelotti in the past week.
