Liverpool signing Christian Benteke can take league by storm, says Reds legend
Former Liverpool captain Graeme Souness runs rule over potential Reds star Christian Benteke ahead of Man United clash
Graeme Souness believes Liverpool striker Christian Benteke is capable of taking the Premier League by storm this season.
The Belgium international became the club’s second-most expensive signing behind Andy Carroll after he completed a £32.5m move to Liverpool from Aston Villa in the summer transfer window.
Benteke scored his first Liverpool goal on his Anfield debut as the 24-year-old netted a first-half winner in a 1-0 victory over Bournemouth in the Premier League last month.
And former Liverpool captain Souness is confident Benteke can be a massive hit for the Reds if the towering striker is fully motivated on a weekly basis.
“He has the potential to be an absolute star,” Souness told Sky Sports. “If he’s fully fired up and motivated, he could take the Premier League by storm and be a superstar at Liverpool.
“But if you have a Benteke who picks and chooses when he plays well then it might not be good enough. A lot of Liverpool’s success this season will rely on Benteke.”
Benteke scored 42 goals in 88 Premier League appearances for Villa during three seasons at the Birmingham side.
The Belgian has failed to find the net in his last two games for Liverpool after drawing a blank against Arsenal and West Ham United.
Liverpool make the trip to Manchester United in their next Premier League game on Saturday evening.
