Louis van Gaal can’t afford to lose to Liverpool, says ex-Man United star

Former Man United midfielder Alan Tonge runs rule over clash with Liverpool at Old Trafford on Saturday

Louis van Gaal will be under growing pressure if Manchester United lose to Liverpool on Saturday, according to Alan Tonge.

The Red Devils face the Merseyside outfit at Old Trafford in their first game since a 2-1 defeat by Swansea City in the Premier League.

Van Gaal’s men have collected seven points from a possible 12 so far this season, but United are already five points adrift of leaders Manchester City.

And former United man Tonge warned Van Gaal that anything other than maximum points won’t be acceptable for the 20-time English champions.

United have spent over £100m on new signings over the summer transfer window.

Van Gaal started his spending spree with the £25m acquisition of Memphis Depay, before he added Bastian Schweinsteiger, Morgan Schneiderlin and Matteo Darmian to his squad.

The Dutchman snapped up Sergio Romero as cover for David De Gea on a free transfer before he completed his summer spending with £36m signing of Anthony Martial.
