Louis van Gaal: Man United lucky to get penalty against Wolfsburg

Louis van Gaal says that Manchester United were lucky to be given a penalty during their 2-1 win over Wolfsburg

Louis van Gaal admitted that Manchester United were fortunate to be given a penalty during their 2-1 win over Wolfsburg in the Champions League on Wednesday night.

United went behind inside four minutes at Old Trafford when Daniel Caligiuri finished off a stylish six-pass move for the opener.

However, Mata drew the home side level when he confidently fired home his penalty in the 34th minute after Caligiuri handled the ball in the box.

Chris Smalling put United ahead shortly after half-time and they held on to notch up their first three points of the group stage after their loss to PSV Eindhoven earlier this month.

Van Gaal conceded that his side were made to work hard for the victory and that they were perhaps somewhat fortuitous to be awarded their spot kick.

Van Gaal told BT Sport: “It was very difficult because they scored so early. Then we did very well, we created a lot of chances. We don’t finish it and it was a lucky penalty I think.

“Of course it is a penalty but there are some refs not whistling for that. We have created much more chances, Rooney and Depay could have scored and you finish the game.

“Then we score and after that it was suffering. A lot of players are very tired, a combination of a lot of matches but we didn’t give much away. How many chances have we given away? Maybe one.

“We have to keep the ball better in the second half.”

United return to action when they travel to north London to take on Arsenal in the Premier League at Emirates Stadium on Sunday afternoon.
