Louis van Gaal: My message to Man United new-boy Anthony Martial
Louis van Gaal discusses his plans for Manchester United teenager Anthony Martial
Louis van Gaal has told Anthony Martial that he will have to prove himself worthy of a regular starting spot in Manchester United’s first-team this season.
The 19-year-old announced himself to the Premier League with a stunning goal against Liverpool in last weekend’s 3-1 win at Old Trafford after he came off the bench to make his United debut.
Martial, who joined the Red Devils from Monaco on transfer deadline day, was then rewarded with his first start for the Premier League club during the 2-1 midweek Champions League defeat by PSV Eindhoven in the Netherlands.
Van Gaal was recently quoted as saying that he considers Martial as a player for the future, however the Dutchman has hinted that he is ready to call upon the forward regularly if he can maintain his good form.
Van Gaal told a news conference at Manchester United’s Carrington training ground on Friday: “When I said he is for the future I meant at 19, a player is not fully developed, but I didn’t say I won’t count on him.
“I have to judge him every week, whether I can use him.
“My decision will be taken based on the training sessions.”
Manchester United travel to Southampton in their next Premier League game on Sunday afternoon after their victory over Liverpool last weekend.
