Man Utd 2 Wolfsburg 1: Player ratings as Juan Mata sparkles

Man Utd 2 Wolfsburg 1: Player ratings as the Red Devils notch up their first win of the group stage at Old Trafford

By Yulea Roopai

David De Gea After conceding the early goal he was hardly under any pressure from Wolfsburg. Led his defence exceptionally well during the dying minutes of the game as the German team pushed for an equaliser. 8/10

Chris Smalling Committed with too much ease as Caligiuri scored. However he slid the ball home from Mata’s superb assist to give Manchester United the lead. 7.5

Matteo Darmian Made a good run down the left wing to deliver a first-time ball which nearly created an equaliser for Juan Mata. Battled against Wolfsburg’s wide-man Draxler but showed a good amount of strength when dealing with Schurrle in the second half. 8

Antonio Valencia One of the worst United players on the pitch and lacked awareness which resulted in Caligiuri’s opener. 6

Juan Mata Denied early by Dante’s header as United searched for an equaliser then scuffed the ball straight into Benaglio, which earned him the penalty and his goal. His best moment came when assisting Smalling’s goal with a wonderful side-foot flick over the defence. 8.5

Bastian Schweinsteiger Was the heart of United’s midfield and created an exceptional presence all night dominating the centre of the park. Booked for a foul on Arnold and was replaced by Jones late in the second half. 8

Morgan Schneiderlin Played a part in Wolfsburg’s opener but was crucial in helping United get back into the match. Harshly handed a yellow card and could have seen red after bringing down Draxler on the counter. 8

Daley Blind Helped create from deep before moving further up the park into central midfield after Schweinsteiger was replaced. 7

Memphis Depay His final touch was poor and failed to capitalised on an early opportunity with a header to bring United back onto level terms. One of his crosses almost hit the mark as Martial attacked in the centre. Earned himself a yellow card for a supposedly raising an arm on Trasch. 8

Anthony Martial Was a constant threat in front of goal for United and asked questions of the Wolfsburg’s back line. Nearly got on the end of a Depay cross to give United the lead. 8.5

Wayne Rooney His only real sight at goal ended with him blazing his hot way over the crossbar. Worked hard for the team getting back to defend and his experience shone in the final minutes. 7.5

Substitutes:

Phil Jones Replaced Schweinsteiger late in the second half. 7

Andreas Pereira Made his Champions League debut, replacing Depay after 62 minutes. 7

Ashley Young Replaced Valencia at half-time and showed great strength, minimising the threat of Caligiuri. Booked for time wasting. 7
