Man United 3 Liverpool 1: Player ratings as Anthony Martial bags debut goal

Player ratings as Manchester United signing Anthony Martial scores debut goal in victory over Liverpool

Manchester United

David De Gea Wasn’t put under any real pressure despite his highly anticipated return to the first-team in the opening half. Guilty of a horrendous pass which almost led to a Liverpool equaliser. Produced a flurry of saves to prove his match sharpness but powerless to stop Benteke’s overhead kick. 8/10

Matteo Darmian The Italy international provided an outlet going forward and wasn’t tested by Firmino. 7

Chris Smalling Overshadowed by his centre-half partner Blind. Dealt well with Benteke. 7

Daley Blind (Man of the match) Handled Benteke’s presence with moderate ease. Showed great composure to polish off a smart set-piece move and break the deadlock in the 48th minute. The Dutch defender produced brilliant goal-line clearance to deny Skrtel. 9

Luke Shaw The United defender impressed down the left wing with his direct running. 7

Michael Carrick Returned to the starting line-up despite picking up an injury on England duty. 7

Bastian Schweinsteiger The experienced Germany international kept United ticking over. 7

Juan Mata The former Chelsea midfielder couldn’t really get a stranglehold on the game. Brought off for £36m summer signing Martial. 6

Ander Herrera The 25-year-old was clever to win a 70th-minute penalty as he duped Gomez into a careless tackle in the area. The Spain international picked himself up and converted the subsequent spot-kick. 7

Memphis Depay The Netherlands winger subdued first half and the pacey summer signing was replaced at half-time. 5

Marouane Fellaini The United midfielder had the chance to hit the target with Mignolet stranded but effort floated harmlessly over. Worked tirelessly with little reward. 6

Liverpool

Simon Mignolet A careless throw fell into Fellaini’s path, but the makeshift centre-forward’s attempt floated over the crossbar. Could do little to stop any of United’s three goals. 5

Nathaniel Clyne The Liverpool defender look unusually nervous in the first half, perhaps concerned by the thought of Shaw’s runs. Conceded a dangerous free-kick which led to Blind’s opener. 5

Martin Skrtel The Reds centre-half was guilty of a poor pass which created panic in his defence. 5

Dejan Lovren While Mignolet and Skrtel took risks playing the ball out of defence, Lovren kept things simple. 6

Joe Gomez Was heading towards an another solid performance from the Liverpool left-back in one of the Premier League’s most daunting grounds. However, his rash challenge led to Herrera’s penalty kick. 5

Emre Can The newly-capped Germany midfielder was Liverpool’s liveliest player, although Can wasn’t efficient in his endeavour. 6

Lucas Leiva The Brazilian committed his customary niggly fouls which broke up the flow of the game. 5

James Milner The Liverpool captain led by example. The 29-year-old’s industry could not be faulted, but lacked creativity. 6

Danny Ings Deployed on the right wing, Ings spent a lot of time tracking Darmian’s runs. The summer signing was denied by full-stretch De Gea save. 6

Christian Benteke The £32.5m summer signing was left isolated by Ings and Firmino. Scored a memorable overhead kick to give Liverpool late hope. However, ended the game on high on a personal note, firing a devastating overhead kick past De Gea. 7

Roberto Firmino The second most-expensive signing of the summer didn’t have much of a say on the encounter. Looked uncomfortable wide on the right. Substituted.
