Man United have taken huge gamble on Anthony Martial, says ex-Monaco man
Former Monaco midfielder John Collins says fans of the Principality's club are 'astounded' by Anthony Martial's transfer fee
Manchester United have taken a huge gamble on France teenager Anthony Martial, according to former Monaco midfielder John Collins.
The Red Devils had been linked with a move for Barcelona forward Neymar and Bayern Munich striker Thomas Muller over the summer transfer window.
Everybody here is absolutely astounded at the price Manchester United have paid and I mean absolutely astounded
However, Louis van Gaal instead opted to sign 19-year-old Martial in a £36m deal from Ligue 1 side Monaco despite the forward scoring just 11 goals in 52 Ligue 1 appearances.
And Collins, who played for Celtic, Monaco and Everton during a credible career, admitted his surprise United were willing to make Martial the most-expensive teenager in history despite his lack of experience.
“I’m over in Monaco now for a couple of days off and obviously I’ve got lots of friends who are into football and have been watching Monaco for a number of years,” Collins told talkSPORT.
“They’re very intelligent and they know football inside out and everybody here is absolutely astounded at the price Manchester United have paid and I mean absolutely astounded.
“He’s made 53 appearances, 27 as a substitute, and he’s only completed four games. Manchester United have taken a huge gamble on potential, because he’s not actually produced week in, week out.”
Martial is the third most-expensive signing in United’s history behind Angel di Maria and Juan Mata.
The teenager has been handed the number nine shirt after Radamel Falcao vacated the number following his Old Trafford exit this summer.
Martial won his first France cap in a 1-0 victory over Portugal on Friday night.
