Man United legend better than David De Gea, says Jan Aage Fjortoft

Jan Aage Fjortoft insists Peter Schmeichel was one of Sir Alex Ferguson's world-class players

Peter Schmeichel was a better goalkeeper than current Manchester United number one David De Gea, according to Jan Aage Fjortoft.

Sir Alex Ferguson failed to name De Gea or Schmeichel among his four world-class players that the United manager coached during his 25-year reign at Old Trafford.

De Gea has, however, blossomed into one of the best goalkeepers in the world over the past 24 months, producing an impressive performance in a 3-2 defeat by Southampton on Sunday.

However, former Middlesbrough man Fjortoft believes De Gea still has some way to go to emulate Treble winner Schmeichel at Old Trafford.

The retired Norwegian player added that Schmeichel was one of Ferguson’s world-class players despite the Scot failing to name the Danish goalkeeper in his list in his newly-released book, Leading.

De Gea signed a new five-year deal with United earlier this month after his proposed move to Real Madrid fell through.
