Man United signing Anthony Martial responds to Wayne Rooney remarks
Manchester United signing Anthony Martial says it is normal that his new captain doesn't know who £36m signing is
Anthony Martial insists that it is normal Wayne Rooney doesn’t know who Manchester United’s new signing is.
The 19-year-old completed a deadline-day £36m transfer to the Red Devils to complete Louis van Gaal’s spending in the summer transfer window.
United midfielder Morgan Schneiderlin revealed Rooney had to ask the midfielder about his French compatriot as news surface of United’s interest over the weekend.
But Martial doesn’t appear to have been offended by Rooney’s lack of knowledge when it comes to United’s third most-expensive signing in the club’s history.
“It’s normal that Rooney doesn’t know who I am,” Martial is quoted as saying by the Independent.
“This is my first time with France and I’ve played a little in Ligue 1.”
The 19-year-old scored eight goals in his last nine appearances for Monaco last season, although the teenager netted just 12 times in 46 appearances in all competitions.
The former Lyon and Monaco striker is set to wear the number nine shirt after it was vacated by Colombia flop Radamel Falcao earlier this summer.
Martial has been likened to Arsenal legend Thierry Henry in terms of his playing style, with the France legend also having played for Monaco in the early stages of his career.
