Man United signing Anthony Martial wildcard player, says Jesper Blomqvist
Former Man United midfielder Jesper Blomqvist runs rule over £36m summer signing Anthony Martial
Jesper Blomqvist believes Manchester United signing Anthony Martial will prove something of a wildcard option for manager Louis van Gaal.
The 19-year-old forward completed a deadline day £36m move to the Red Devils from Ligue 1 side Monaco as he came United’s third-most expensive signing.
Martial, who won his first France cap last week, scored 11 goals in 52 Ligue 1 games for Lyon and Monaco before his big-money switch to Old Trafford.
And Treble winner Blomqvist believes United may have to wait a little while before the Red Devils see the very best of their third-most expensive signing.
“I think he is a little bit more of a wildcard,” Blomqvist told United’s website.
“I personally know how hard it is to adapt to the Premier League as it’s something different to all the other leagues. It takes more physical presence to adapt. He will get that but it may take a little bit more time for him.
“There is a little bit of a question mark over how soon he can perform and score goals for United.”
Martial signed a three-year deal and made his Ligue 1 debut for Monaco in November 2013, netting two league goals as the club finished runners-up to Paris Saint-Germain in the French top flight.
In his two and a half seasons as a professional, Martial has netted just 13 league goals, all of which have come for Monaco and 10 of which were scored in league action.
Martial could make his United debut in their clash against Liverpool at Old Trafford in the Premier League on Saturday afternoon.
