Man United star Juan Mata picks out Wolfsburg’s danger men
The Manchester United midfielder says the Red Devils must be wary of Julian Draxler and Andre Schurrle
Juan Mata says Manchester United must watch out for Wolfsburg duo Julian Draxler and Andre Schurrle in their Champions League clash on Wednesday night.
The Red Devils are looking to secure their first group-stage win after a 2-1 defeat by Eredivisie champions PSV Eindhoven earlier this month.
I have seen them in a few games and they are a dangerous team with talented players I know very well, like Schürrle, a former team-mate
Wolfsburg, meanwhile, were 1-0 winners against CSKA Moscow thanks to former Arsenal target Draxler’s 40th-minute winner against the Russian side.
Mata previously played alongside Wolfsburg winger Schurrle during his stay at Chelsea before a £37.1m move to United in January 2014.
And the Spain international warned Louis van Gaal’s squad that Wolfsburg are a “dangerous” opponent.
“The first game is against Wolfsburg at home,” Mata wrote on his blog, One Hour Behind.
“We know we must fix our situation in the group after losing against PSV on week 1. In order to do so we count on Old Trafford, because we are sure our crowd will celebrate being back to the top competition in Europe.
“The Germans played very well last season, and they are having a good start in this one. I have seen them in a few games and they are a dangerous team with talented players I know very well, like Schürrle, a former team-mate. After Kevin de Bruyne’s exit they have made important signings like Draxler, and they keep being very competitive.”
United are unbeaten in their last six home fixtures in Uefa competitions (five wins, one draw), including the 3-1 success against Club Brugge in August’s play-off round.
This is the first time the Red Devils have entered their second game of a Champions League campaign without a point since 1996/97, when they started with a 1-0 loss at Juventus.
