Man United transfers: Anthony Martial really special player, says Chelsea legend
Former Chelsea midfielder Pat Nevin runs rule of Manchester United target Anthony Martial
Anthny Martial will be a smashing signing for Manchester United, according to Pat Nevin.
The Red Devils are reportedly on the brink of completing the £39m signing of the Monaco forward ahead of the summer transfer window deadline at 18:00 BST on Tuesday evening.
He is a fabulous footballer. He is going to be a really, really special player
The uncapped France forward has emerged as a surprise contender to bolster United’s attacking options as Javier Hernandez reportedly edges closer to a move to Bayer Leverkusen.
The 19-year-old scored eight goals in his last nine appearances for Monaco last season, although the teenager netted just 12 times in 46 appearances in all competitions.
While some former professionals greeted the latest transfer speculation with some scepticism on Twitter, former Chelsea winger Nevin backed Martial to blossom into a really special player.
“Martial. Wow! What a player,” Nevin told Newstalk’s Off The Ball show. “Honestly, he is going to be special, really special.
“There aren’t many players I get excited about. I’ve only seen him twice now and I was absolutely knocked out.
“He is very young and he has a bit to learn. He needs someone up there alongside him for a while for a little while.
“He is a fabulous footballer. He is going to be a really, really special player.”
Nevin admitted that Martial will require time to adjust to life in the Premier League, but insisted the forward has huge talent.
“I’m not saying he will 100 per cent will do it this year. It is too hard to come into the Premier League and into a team that isn’t sparkling,” Nevin added.
“He has the skills of Gomis for Swansea, but a more technical skill. When he moves, he is a very quick player as well.
“Manchester United have a smashing signing there.”
