Man United’s Memphis Depay criticised by ex-Netherlands star
Willem van Hanegem is not impressed by the Netherland's current crop of players, including Manchester United's star man
Willem van Hanegem has hit out at Memphis Depay and the rest of the Netherlands squad after their Euro 2016 hopes took a further blow on Sunday.
The Oranje slumped to a 3-0 loss to Turkey to leave Holland fourth in Group A and needing two wins from their remaining two games against Kazakhstan and Czech Republic.
And former central midfielder Van Hanegem has been left unimpressed by the current crop of Netherlands stars, especially Manchester United’s summer signing.
“There are a few players at Oranje that only think about themselves,” Van Hanegem wrote in Dutch paper Algemeen Dagblad.
“Take Memphis for instance. He’s just like Goldfinger with his golden shoes. But what is the use of that for Netherlands?
“He just lay on the ground, it makes you feel despondent.”
Depay has been a regular fixture in Manchester United’s first-team since joining the Old Trafford outfit from PSV Eindhoven back in May.
The 21-year-old has started all four of United’s Premier League games but was unable to prevent Louis van Gaal’s men from slumping to a surprise 2-1 defeat by Swansea City at the Liberty Stadium in their most recent outing.
Depay and his United colleagues will be hoping to return to winning ways when they host Liverpool at Old Trafford on Saturday evening.
