Mauricio Pochettino sends message to Tottenham fans over Erik Lamela
Mauricio Pochettino says Tottenham Hotspur need to be patient with Erik Lamela
Mauricio Pochettino has called for patience from Tottenham Hotspur fans as he looks to extract the best form out of Erik Lamela.
The Argentina playmaker has failed to produce consistent form for the Lilywhites since his big-money transfer to Spurs from Roma in the summer of 2013.
Lamela was linked with a transfer away from Spurs during the summer window but a move failed to materialise.
The playmaker provided the assist for Ryan Mason’s winner in the 1-0 victory over Sunderland at the Stadium of Light on Sunday afternoon.
And Pochettino is confident that Spurs will soon see the best of the 23-year-old.
Pochettino is quoted as saying by Goal: “We believe we can develop his game and I think we need to be patient with him.
“It’s true, now is the third season here, but we believe in him and we want to give the opportunity to show his value. We have a lot of games to play, for competition, we need a good player in all positions. I think with the squad we have, we have a very good balance.
“I think this is a key season for him. After two seasons at Tottenham, now is the moment for him. Not to put pressure, but it’s true. It’s a key moment for him to develop and to move on his game. It’s important.”
Argentina attacker Lamela has started just one of Tottenham’s five Premier League games so far this season.
He will be hoping to feature when Spurs take on Qarabag in their Europa League group stage opener at White Hart Lane on Thursday night.
