McAllister delivers latest Liverpool injury update ahead of Villa clash
The Liverpool assistant manager gives update on Roberto Firmino and Dejan Lovren
Gary McAllister says Liverpool are optimistic Roberto Firmino and Dejan Lovren haven’t suffered serious injuries after the pair were forced off in their League Cup third-round victory.
The Brazil international had to be replaced by Divock Origi in the 34th minute after the £29m summer signing picked up an injury problem in the first half of their victory over Carlisle United.
The cup tie went into extra time after Danny Ings saw his strike cancelled out and centre-half Lovren had to come off despite Liverpool using all their substitutes.
Liverpool assistant manager McAllister discussed the injured duo ahead of the visit of Aston Villa in the Premier League on Saturday afternoon.
“[Lovren]’s landed awkwardly. It didn’t look too good as he was stretchered off but fingers crossed I don’t think it’s as bad as it looked,” McAllister told Liverpool’s website.
“[Firmino], like Dejan, landed badly. It was just a ball he went up for and he’s landed on the base of his spine, just on his lower back.
“It’s an awkward landing but he seems fine as well.”
Ings scored in successive games to give the Merseyside outfit an early lead but the League Two side levelled thanks to Derek Asamoah.
Liverpool had 47 shots on goal, 16 of which were on target, but Brendan Rodgers’s side required a penalty shootout after being left frustrated.
And Bogdan, who declared his desire to usurp Simon Mignolet before the cup tie, made three saves to seal a 3-2 win on penalties.
