Man United star runs rule over Anthony Martial’s debut
Manchester United midfielder Michael Carrick says Anthony Martial made perfect start to Old Trafford career
Michael Carrick has warned Anthony Martial that he has raised the expectations of Manchester United fans after his dream debut at Old Trafford on Saturday.
The 19-year-old teenager scored his first United goal in the 86th minute to seal a 3-1 victory over bitter rivals Liverpool in the Premier League.
It’s a lot of money, of course it is. I suppose time will tell, won’t it? But to start like that you can’t really ask for more
Martial completed a £36m move to the Red Devils on transfer deadline day which made the forward the most-expensive teenager in Europe.
And United midfielder Carrick believes Martial’s debut was the perfect tonic for the France international after his high-pressure switch.
“He is off the mark now. He has announced himself; everyone has seen it on the big stage. It’s a good start for him,” Carrick is quoted as saying by reporters.
“It’s a good way to settle him and if that has raised expectation then so be it but that is part of the game. It doesn’t get any better than that does it, coming in and coming on and scoring against Liverpool like that.
“He has done well to get in that position and I thought the finish was terrific, how he just slotted it home, he was so calm and composed and you can’t ask for a better start.
“It’s a lot of money, of course it is. I suppose time will tell, won’t it? But to start like that you can’t really ask for more.”
Martial scored 11 goals in 52 Ligue 1 appearances for Lyon and Monaco before the striker completed his big-money summer move to Old Trafford.
The French teenager was just one of six summer signings at the 20-time English champions after Louis van Gaal spent over £100m.
Memphis Depay was the first to join United, before Morgan Schneiderlin, Bastian Schweinsteiger and Matteo Darmian all completed moves in mid-July.
Van Gaal also secured Sergio Romero on a free transfer.
