Mourinho confirms new Chelsea signing will start against Walsall
Jose Mourinho confirms that both Radamel Falcao and John Terry will start Chelsea's League Cup tie at Walsall
Jose Mourinho has confirmed that both Radamel Falcao and John Terry will start Wednesday night’s League Cup third-round clash against Walsall.
Both Terry and Falcao were unused substitutes as Mourinho’s men secured a dramatic 2-0 win over nine-man Arsenal in the Premier League on Saturday lunchtime.
However, the Blues boss has revealed that the pair will start the midweek game at the Banks’s Stadium.
Mourinho told Chelsea’s website: “Of course John’s experience will help. He didn’t play the last match so he is completely fresh and completely motivated to play, the same as Falcao, for example.
“Chelsea is Chelsea, and wearing the Chelsea shirt always brings responsibility. Every player is more than happy to play.”
The Chelsea boss also underlined his desire to help the Blues retain the trophy they won last season by beating Tottenham Hotspur in the final at Wembley as they look to win their first tie.
The Portuguese coach continued: “I don’t see reasons to throw away any competition.
“A cup is a cup. A trophy is a trophy. If you lose, you lose but you don’t need to throw it away.
“So yes, we look to the competition in a proper way, and I also think it’s very important to respect opponents.
“I don’t think opponents from the Championship, League One or League Two expect the big clubs to go and play against them without the best players.”
Saturday’s win over Arsenal – their second Premier League victory of the season – left Chelsea 15th in the table with seven points from their opening six top-flight games.
The west London side host Newcastle United at Stamford Bridge in their next Premier League game on Saturday afternoon.
