Neil Mellor: Christian Benteke determined to be success at Liverpool
The former Liverpool striker runs rule over Christian Benteke
Neil Mellor says he was struck by Christian Benteke’s determination to be a success at Liverpool after having interviewed the £32.5m summer signing.
The towering Belgium international has scored two goals in five Premier League appearances for the Reds following his big-money summer move to Anfield from Aston Villa.
He clearly has real talent if that’s the case. But believe me he has the quiet desire as well
Benteke, who moved to the Premier League from Genk in 2012, will have the chance to add to his tally against newly-promoted Norwich City on Merseyside on Sunday afternoon.
And Champions League winner Mellor underlined Benteke’s burning desire to become a huge hit at the 18-time English champions.
“I’ve just done a one-to-one interview with Benteke which is being broadcast by lfc.tv at 8.30pm on Monday,” Mellor told Liverpool Echo.
“We talked about his background in Africa and it was clear his father, who was in the military, was an important figure in his life. But what also struck me as we spoke was how determined he is to prove himself a success at Liverpool.
“He’s come in for a big fee as an established Belgian international but is desperate to prove himself to the club and the fans.
“I did ask him if that goal at United was the best he’s scored – fully expecting a yes. But he said he’d scored better ones for both Aston Viilla and Belgium!
“He clearly has real talent if that’s the case. But believe me he has the quiet desire as well.”
Benteke scored against Bournemouth and Manchester United but failed to trouble Stoke City, Arsenal and West Ham United.
The Belgian netted 42 times in 88 Premier League games for Villa during a three-season stay at the Birmingham club.
Liverpool have collected seven points from a possible 15 in the Premier League.
