New Man United signing: My message to Luke Shaw
Morgan Schneiderlin sends his best wishes to Luke Shaw after the Manchester United defender's horrific injury
Morgan Schneiderlin has told Luke Shaw that he must stay strong as he begins his road to recovery from his broken leg.
The England defender suffered a double fracture of his right leg during Manchester United’s Champions League defeat by PSV Eindhoven on Tuesday night and underwent surgery in the Netherlands this week.
Shaw is due to fly back to Manchester on Saturday to begin his recovery to full fitness.
And with United set to travel to Shaw’s former club Southampton in the Premier League on Sunday afternoon, Schneiderlin had a message of support for the 20-year-old.
Schneiderlin told MUTV: “I spoke to him and told him that I am behind him, his family. It will be a tough time but he’s got to stay strong. It’s easier to say than do but he’s a young lad with his head on his shoulders. He looks OK. He’s strong mentally and I’m sure he will go back and work every day to come back as soon as possible.”
Asked about the many messages of support for Shaw, he continued: “It’s lovely. In those difficult moments in the football world we are one family. We all know how it is to have a big injury and how bad we feel when we are injured – even for a small amount of time such as three or four weeks.
“We know how it is to be out for so long, so it’s nice to see the people sending him best wishes. From Southampton, [the message] was very nice. He grew up there and was in the academy. They made him when he was young and they’re a very nice club.”
Shaw was all smiles after the successful operation in Holland on Saturday morning as he prepared to jet back to Manchester.
United, who are second in the table, head to St Mary’s looking to build on their impressive 3-1 win over Liverpool in the Premier League in their most recent top-flight outing last weekend.
