Pat Nevin: Why I’m not surprised by Anthony Martial’s Man United start
Former Chelsea man say Anthony Martial knows that he is really good
Pat Nevin says he isn’t surprised by Anthony Martial’s perfect start to his Manchester United career.
The 19-year-old forward scored twice in a 3-2 victory over Southampton on his full Premier League debut at St Mary’s on Sunday afternoon.
He has what it takes. He has got a few tricks that players can learn. I look forward to seeing how he can adapt to it. This start isn’t a massive surprise for me
Martial netted United’s third in a 3-1 win against bitter rivals Liverpool in his first top-flight appearance following his £36m move to Old Trafford on transfer deadline day earlier this month.
Former Chelsea winger Nevin believes Martial is aware of just how good he is, hailing the teenager’s finishing ability after a return of three goals in three games.
“I was surprised everyone was so quick on his back,” Nevin told Newstalk’s Off The Ball.
“You can almost tell by a player’s stance and gait. You can tell by the way he carries himself. This guy knows he’s good. He really knows he is good.
“He doesn’t panic. The players at the top level slow down before they score, the vast majority do the opposite and panic. The great strikers, they slow down in the box, that’s how they can do the extra dummies and get extra space to pass it in.
“He has what it takes. He has got a few tricks that players can learn. I look forward to seeing how he can adapt to it. This start isn’t a massive surprise for me.”
Martial became Europe’s most-expensive teenager after his £36m move to United from Ligue 1 side Monaco in the summer transfer window.
The newly-capped France forward scored 11 goals in 52 games in the French top-flight during spells at Lyon and Monaco.
The Red Devils face Sunderland in their next Premier League game at Stadium of Light on Saturday afternoon.
