Paul Merson: Arsenal could have signed Karim Benzema for £80m
Former Arsenal playmaker Paul Merson says Gunners fans are being cheated after Arsene Wenger spent £10m this summer
Arsenal could have signed Karim Benzema if they’d been willing to cough up a big fee for the Real Madrid striker, according to Paul Merson.
The Gunners didn’t add any new players to their squad on transfer deadline day despite the general consensus Arsenal could do with a new centre-half, midfielder and striker.
£10m? That’s like Accrington Stanley buying someone for £10
Arsene Wenger was heavily linked with a move for France striker Benzema throughout the transfer window, although the 27-year-old reiterated his continued loyalty to the 10-time European champions.
But former Arsenal midfielder Merson believes Benzema would have moved to Emirates Stadium if the FA Cup holders had put together a mammoth offer.
Merson told Sky Sports: “Arsenal if they wanted to pay £80m for Benzema, they’d get him.
“Why not pay it? They’ve got the money there.
“They’d go on to win the Premier League and they’d be a massive threat in the Champions League. They haven’t done any of that.”

Merson accused Arsenal and Wenger of cheating their supporters after the Gunners only summer signing was Petr Cech in a deal in the region of £11m from defending Premier League champions Chelsea.
“I feel the fans are being cheated a little bit here. They’ve got top dollar but haven’t brought anyone in,” Merson added.
“£10m? That’s like Accrington Stanley buying someone for £10.”
Arsenal have won two of their opening four games in the Premier League this season.
